Storybook Dads
Maintains family ties between prisoners and their children through the production of story CDs, read, recorded and edited by prisoners and sent to their children. Over 150,000 children each year are affected by the imprisonment of a parent and this forced separation often leads to feelings of abandonment, low self esteem and depression. The CD's are a great source of comfort and empowerment for the children because they can listen to their parent's voice whenever they feel that they need to. The parents are proud that they are doing something for their children and they realize that although they are behind bars, they can still have a positive impact on their children's lives. Prisoners who maintain family ties are six times less likely to re-offend upon release.
