My name is Alex Mitchell and on the 16th July 2009, I will set out on a solo cycle tour around Europe to raise money for charity. Starting and finishing in my home town of Glasgow, I will be cycling an average of more than 80 miles a day over 10 weeks - a total of more than 5000 miles. The journey will take me through Scandanvia, the Baltic states, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, along the Mediterranean coast into Spain and then back northwards to Glasgow. My goal in doing this, is to raise at least £5000 - £1 per mile traveled - for my two chosen charities, NetWorks and 4WORD Creative Arts. NetWorks are involved in helping the poorest of the poor in several communities of northwest Romania. Just some of the many things they do include the running of homes for young homeless men and woman, helping families with critical repairs on their homes and with urgent medical supplies, and running employment programs and micro-enterprise schemes to help people support their families. 4WORD is a Glasgow based community creative arts project working with patients at the Yorkhill Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the also with youth in the Maryhill area. With help from local artists, 4WORD provides a free service for local children encouraging them to explore and develop their creative talents and build their confidence. I have been personally volunteering with both of these organisations for the past four years or so and they both do really amazing things to help and support people in the local community.
