As many of you know Scarlett and Harry entered the world a bit earlier than expected. It was their good fortune to arrive at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent, where they were nursed to recovery in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Simply, without the expertise, dedication and love of the nurses and doctors there, Scarlett and Harry wouldn't be with us today.

As a way of saying thank you and to help other babies and families born into a similar situation, Jim will be cycling from London to Paris at the end of July 2009, about 300 miles, over 4 days.

We are going to be doing it independently to avoid paying costs to an organising company so are funding the trip ourselves and will be ably supported by the grandparents and cheered on by Mandy, Scarlett and Harry.

East Kent Hospitals Nhs Trust Charitable Fund, by prior agreement with the charity the money raised is subsequently distributed to the neonatal unit, typically put towards the latest equipment or additional training for staff in the latest neonatal nursing methods. From experience we know that progress over just the last 10 years made a huge difference to Scarlett and Harry.

I have invested in a new bike, comfortable saddle and extra padded cycling shorts to ensure minimal saddle sore! So far I have managed over 800 training miles since November so things are going well and your sponsorship will spur me on further! So come on, forget the credit crunch, put your hands in your pockets and sponsor me and support this fantastic baby unit!

Failure to sponsor me through this route will see one of a number of people dotted around the country approaching you soon with one of those old paper form type things!
