Safmarine and Netlib: Starting a Vocational / trade school for young Liberians

WHAT OR WHO IS NETLIB ?

NETLIB is a network for the development of Liberia. This network is established solely to develop and improve the Social, Economic and Political life in Liberia.
NETLIB is neither a governmental nor a commercial organization;
NETLIB is a foundation that helps Liberia help itself.

SAFMARINE AND NETLIB ?

The first contact between Netlib and Safmarine dated from August 2007. At that time it was just a dream of Netlib to establish a self sustenance craftsman school in Liberia (Monrovia) that would provide knowledge and skills for mainly ex-combatant and school drop-out youths (‘risk group’) in the area of carpentry, masonry and tailoring, but also to include practical aspect to the courses (i.e.: How to start and run a small business, how to become economically independent using ones own skills, etc…).

The UN has estimated more than 85% of mostly young Liberians are currently out of jobs due to lack of skills and expertise. The UN is preparing a large scale reconstruction program for Liberia. Anticipating upon this, Netlib has seen the opportunity to help young Liberians develop skills that will be needed in the reconstruction of the country instead of depending in long term on Foreign Labor.

Safmarine came up with the idea to start a “Container in the community” project and Netlib rapidly understood that their idea of the school could become reality.

Safmarine started a cooperation between a dutch technical school ‘ROC van Twente’, a dutch road transport company ‘Bolk Transport’ and the NGO ‘Netlib Foundation’ in the beginning of 2008.

The specific goal of the cooperation is to set up a vocational school facility for carpentry, masonry and tailoring in Monrovia and to be operational within 10 months after starting.
In the meanwhile the education is started and the temporary school is located in a rented building till the “Container in the community” project in Monrovia is ready. Aside the donations, reconstructions and transport of 40 ft containers for the construction of the schoolbuilding there is a need to raise extra money in reconciliation of the period when Safmarine and cooperation partners will launch the project in 2009.
