As many of you will know I have recently been made redundant from my job of 8 years working with children and young people for a community organisation in Hackney. But rather than dwell on this as a negative, I have chosen to take this opportunity to follow my dreams and pursue a matter close to my heart. I first visited Thailand back in 2004, just before the devastating Tsunami hit. It was really hard to know that some of the beautiful people I had met would have undoubtedly been affected by the disaster, and ever since I have often wished I could do something to help.
In Thailand the Tsunami mostly affected the southern provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, and as a result many children were left orphaned and homeless. The Tsunami volunteer orphanage located in Phang Nga province, between Takua Pa and Phuket, was set up to care for children who either lost their families in the disaster, or who's families where no longer able to care for them due to the loss of their homes or businesses. When I started to look for possible volunteering opportunities, this orphanage stood out to me straight away, and I have now signed up to spend four weeks there as a volunteer from February 2011, through a registered UK organisation called WAVA.
There are approximately 23 children at the orphanage, where the ethos is to provide them with as much of a home environment as possible that feels as intimate and inviting as a normal family arrangement - offering security and affection to the many disadvantaged children left homeless and orphaned by the Tsunami. Whilst the orphanage project does its best to provide several children with essential care, teaching them life skills for their future, and giving them emotional support when necessary - there is a huge need for ongoing economic and social aid. The orphanage depends heavily on the required donations of volunteers to ease some of its demands and remain open. Day to day activities for volunteers include dropping off and collecting the children at school, helping in the onsite garden and bakery, playing games and sports, organizing activities and sharing meals.
The children and staff are able to make money through the sale of food from the orphanage's bakery and organic garden, and with the help of volunteers, the fresh produce and baked goods are then sold at the local Thai Saturday market. In addition to the day to day volunteering, I also intend to put my Social Enterprise degree to good use and help the staff there look at other ways in which they can generate more income and increase their profits, making them a sustainable and self-sufficient enterprise.
So this is where you come in... I have a total fundraising target of £1000 and I am asking my wonderful friends and families to please support me to volunteer at the Tsunami orphanage, and hopefully help me assist them in making some long lasting and sustainable changes for their future. Absolutely any contribution will be appreciated, and this year I would much prefer a donation to this cause to any Christmas presents you may have kindly given me. Many thanks for your time and generosity x
