Event: Run Hadrian's Wall
Event Date: 18th December 2010
Charitie(s) Supported: The Julia Thomson Memorial Trust,

On December 18th 2010 Alex Breeze and Andrew Burton will be making a traverse of Hadrian’s Wall Path in order to raise funds for the Julia Thomson Memorial Fund and The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. Despite the lack of daylight hours and the potential for driech winter conditions, we plan on completing the run in less than 24 hours.
Both Julia and Freddie were fantastic fun to be around and left a lot of smiles on many faces. They will not be forgotten and through our fundraising we hope to be able to make a lasting contribution to the two charitable causes that have resonance and meaning to both Julia and Freddy.
In 2007, Julia Thomson was killed whilst crossing the road in New York. She was one of the most effervescent people we have met, with a heart of gold, full of love and care for everyone that she met. To make something positive out of the situation Julia’s family set up the Julia Thomson Memorial Fund. The main purpose of the Fund is to support an existing private community project in the north of Brazil in an area where the Thomson family have a house.
The project, known as “The Garden of Angels”, involves the provision of crèche and pre-school care for the many poor children of the neighbouring town, “Favella”, and the surrounding area. It is through this project that their parents are enabled to go out to work in the knowledge that their children are safe and are being well looked after. Many of the children live in areas of serious poverty and come from broken homes or have very young mothers. The need to provide some stability and a sense of community value to children from such deprived backgrounds is obvious and the benefits are enormous. The project is appropriate for Julia’s memory as she worked for a period for a similar project in Peru.
There is a video of the centre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se85UzFLNeo and more information can be found at http://www.juliathomsonmemorial.com
Freddy Wyvil was born with heart problems, or 'a dodgy ticker' as he called it. However, it was down to the amazing work of the staff in the Children’s Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary that we were all blessed with someone like Freddy, even if it was for a shorter time than we would have liked. Freddy’s enthusiasm for life was without bounds and we feel that the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund will do their utmost to give any child the same chance that Freddy received.
The Children's Heart Surgery Fund is a registered charity based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds General Infirmary. This centre covers Yorkshire, Humberside and the North Midlands. The Children’s Heart Unit continues to strive to give the joy and hope to families that they did during Freddy’s early days.
The CHSF funds valuable equipment, resources and research for the treatment of children with heart defects and provides a happy and relaxed atmosphere within the hospital for both the children and their families. Every year 10,000 children pass through our paediatric heart unit at the LGI and approximately 330 of these undergo open heart surgery. Over 40% will need long term care. The CHSF aim is to ensure that these children have the best possible chance of survival. In their own words ‘Our hope is to give each child a childhood; our dream is to give them an adulthood.’ More information can be found at www.chsf.org.uk
