Race for Equality - Steve's Big Swim

"I'm hoping to become the first British blind man to swim the English Channel!"

Steve McCarthy, 42, from Bournemouth, will swim the 22-mile route in 2012, braving rough seas, busy shipping lanes and cold water to make his way into the record books. He's being supported by comedian and actor David Walliams.

Steve is being supported by and is raising funds for the charity Access Dorset. Access Dorset aims to make it possible for all disabled people to lead active lives and realise their potential.  Access Dorset is run by disabled people, older people and carers. It brings together a partnership of local, membership-led organisations.

Steve says: "I'm up to four mile swims now, but as winter gets closer and the sea becomes colder it's getting harder.  I don't swim in a wetsuit - they're deemed to be buoyancy aids and aren't allowed for those attempting a channel swim.  David Walliams gave me lots of useful advice - including covering myself in goose fat to keep warm.

"The first time I swam in the sea after losing my sight was very frightening - when you can't see the waves coming they can push you right over, but my technique is improving and I'm getting fitter. Swimming the Channel has been a lifelong ambition but losing my sight made me even more determined and actually put me in touch with the support and the opportunity to do it. Please support me and Access Dorset by sponsoring my Big Swim!"
