PUBLICAN SWITCHES PULLING PINTS FOR PEDAL POWER

‘End to End' Bike ride raises money for local cancer charity

A publican is using pedal power to raise money for a local cancer charity. Allan Shutt, owner of The Station Inn at Ribblehead, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is in training for the 1066 mile cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats in June next year.

Money raised from the ride will benefit the Steve Prescott Foundation, a charity created by the former Rugby League and GB Lions player who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2006. He set up the Foundation to increase awareness not just of his own condition, but the valuable work of The Christie Hospital in Manchester, one of Europe's leading cancer centres, and the Rugby League Benevolent Fund.

Local businesses in Settle are supporting Allan. 3 Peaks Cycles has donated a bike and cycle gear to give him the best chance of success, and Castleberg Outdoors has donated performance outdoor clothing and accessories for his training programme.

Ex professional golfer, Allan, admits that he needs to get back into shape to take on the gruelling challenge but is looking forward to raising money and generating sponsorship with a series of events at The Station Inn over the coming months.

Said Allan: "Steve was told that he had three months to live and that he wouldn't see his children grow up.  Since then, he's been battling the terminal illness and it hasn't stopped him from trying new challenges to raise money for his charity that pushes his body to the limits. He in an inspiration and I am proud to be part of his fund-raising efforts."

Ian from 3 Peaks Cycles www.3peakscycles.com said: "We're really pleased to support Allan's fund-raising efforts and will be giving him tips throughout his training to get him on top form for the ride."

Steven Craig at Castleberg Outdoors www.castlebergoutdoors.co.uk said: "As a local business we are only too happy to do what we can to be part of the fund-raising. As Allan's training gets underway throughout the autumn and winter months he'll need to be kitted out to protect him from the elements! We wish him well."

Allan's End to End charity cycle ride in June 2011 will take him past his own pub for a welcome stop-over in the Dales before he continues north.
