Event Date: 10th January 2009
Charitie(s) Supported: R N L I,
On the 10th of January with -2 ºC Temp we succesfully ripped the World Record for Underwater Ironing from the Australians grasp.
With 128 ironing divers and 11 photographers/videographers entering the water, we ensured we had 86 ironing divers recorded within a 10 min time frame, beating the previous world record by 14.
All of this was done to raise money for the RNLI Train one Save many campaign.
So far the event has raised about £10,000 for the RNLI - truly splendid. It was an amazing event, one I'm privileged to have taken part in and won't forget for a long, long time - silly, safe, and a masterpiece of quality event organisation. Oh - yes, it was a bit chilly!
The Result
Anyone who saw the Metro on 12 January (and indeed, pieces since then in the Sun or the Telegraph, or on many ITV Regions' local news and currently on BBC and a variety of TV stations worldwide!) should have gathered that we believe we made it: a record of 86 people counted and authenticated as ironing underwater within the allotted 10 minute period. Naturally it may be a while before it's officially confirmed"
The press release issued by the organisers said:
UK Divers Break World Record for the most number of divers ironing underwater at the same time in aid of the RNLI
128 scuba divers braved the freezing winter temperatures today, 10 January 2009, to attempt to break the world record, currently held by the Australians, for the most number of divers ironing at the same time underwater. The previous record was 72 but the British divers managed to get 86 ironing within a 10 minute period and this also included 6 freedivers. Water temperatures were in the region of 5 degrees Celsius and air temperatures as low as -2 degrees C. Divers covered the full range from technical diving with trimix to 55m to the shallow end at 6m.
The event took place at the National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC) near Chepstow, Gloucestershire and was organised by Gareth Lock, Morag Ward and John Turnock of the Yorkshire Divers internet forum www.yorkshire-divers.co.uk to breaking the world record, the aim was to raise money for the RNLI, the charity of choice for the forum for 2008-2009.
